Yard signs are one of the most useful things we make. A $24 sign can congratulate a graduate, point people to an open house, tell the whole street who is running for council, or let everyone driving by know which contractor is doing the work. They are also one of the few things we make where there are real rules about where they can go. This guide covers both.
Pick the right size
| Size | Best for | Price for 1 | Price each at 25 |
|---|---|---|---|
| 18 x 24 in. coroplast, single sided | Graduation, birthdays, campaign signs, open house | $24.00 | $11.50 |
| 18 x 24 in. coroplast, double sided | Corner lots and signs seen from both directions | $26.00 | $14.00 |
| 24 x 36 in. coroplast | Busy roads, business and job-site signs | $34.50 | see designer |
| 6 x 24 in. rider | Add-on strip like "Open Sunday" or "Sold" | $18.00 | see designer |
Prices come down fast: an 18 by 24 single-sided sign is $24.00 for one, $14.00 each at 5, $12.50 at 10, and $10.50 each at 100. Metal H-stakes are included. Need something more permanent? A 12 by 18 aluminum sign starts at $30.00. For an event or storefront, a 2 by 4 foot vinyl banner starts at $30.50, 3 by 6 feet is $50.50, and 4 by 8 feet is $78.50.
Signs are not clothing, so New Jersey sales tax of 6.625% applies. Standard turnaround is 5 to 7 business days after the deposit, or 3 business days with rush for 25% more.
Single or double sided?
If the sign sits flat against a house or faces one direction, single sided is fine. If it is out by the curb and people approach from both ways, double sided is worth the extra $2.00. On a corner lot it is almost always worth it.
Design tips that actually matter
- Five to seven words. People read a yard sign in a couple of seconds from a moving car.
- Big type. On an 18 by 24 sign, the main line should be at least 3 to 4 inches tall.
- Strong contrast. Dark on light or light on dark. School colors are great if they contrast; navy and black together are not.
- One photo, not five. For graduation signs, a single big photo reads better than a collage.
- Phone number or website, not both, on business signs. Make it the biggest thing after the name.
Where you can and cannot put yard signs in New Jersey
We are not lawyers, and sign rules are set town by town. These are the general rules worth knowing, and when in doubt, call your borough or township clerk or zoning office before installing.
Not on state highways
Private signs are not allowed in the right-of-way of State highways like Route 4 or Route 17. NJDOT's rules on outdoor advertising and signs (N.J.A.C. 16:41) cover this, and signs placed there can be removed. The strip of grass between the sidewalk and the road on a local street is often town property too, so check before you plant a sign there.
Your own lawn is usually fine, within limits
On your own property, a graduation, birthday or "welcome home" sign is generally fine. Towns can regulate things like size, number, placement and how long temporary signs stay up. Under the Supreme Court's decision in Reed v. Town of Gilbert, towns generally cannot treat signs differently based on what they say, which is why many sign ordinances were rewritten in recent years to focus on size, location and timing instead of the message.
Business and temporary signs often need permits
Business signs, grand opening banners and temporary signs at commercial properties are where permits come up most. In our own town, the Borough of Paramus lists sign permits and a temporary sign application, and in October 2026 the borough updated its sign ordinance, including rules for banners and flags in its highway commercial zones, as TAPinto Paramus reported. If you run a business on Route 4 or Route 17, read the new rules before you hang a banner. Other Bergen County towns have their own ordinances, so the same banner may need a permit in one town and not the next.
Campaign signs need a "paid for by" line
If a sign is paid for by a candidate or committee to support a candidate or ballot question, New Jersey requires a political identification statement. According to the ELEC compliance manual, that "paid for by" line includes the name and address of the committee, person or group, and the requirement applies to school board candidates too. We are happy to add the line to the design. Make sure the name and address match what is on file with ELEC. Many towns also have rules on when campaign signs must be taken down after an election.
Real estate signs must name the brokerage
New Jersey's real estate advertising rules require ads, including signs, to show the name of the brokerage the licensee works for, under N.J.A.C. 11:5-6.1. The rule also has details about when the word "broker" is needed, with an exception for lawn signs on small residential properties. Your broker of record will have the exact format they want, so send us their approved layout or logo.
Contractor job-site signs
Licensed and registered contractors in New Jersey often have to include their registration or license number on advertising. Home improvement contractors are a common example. We cover those numbers in our truck lettering guide, and the same information usually belongs on your lawn signs.
Common uses around Bergen County
- Graduation signs: high school seniors, eighth grade moving-up, college grads. Order in May, before every other family does.
- Sports and activity signs: "Home of a Senior Athlete" style signs with the player name and number, for senior night or a whole team.
- Open house and directional signs with riders.
- Contractor and landscaper signs left on a job for a week with permission from the homeowner.
- Event signs for fundraisers, church events and block parties.
Making them last
Push the H-stake into the flutes at the bottom of the sign, then into soft ground. If the ground is hard, water it first. For windy spots, a double-sided sign on two stakes, or zip ties to a fence, works better. Store signs flat and out of the sun between uses and they can be reused for years.
Design yours
Open the sign designer, pick a size, add your photo and text, and you will see the price with tax before you order. Want shirts to match the sign? The apparel designer uses the same artwork. Pickup is contactless at our door in Paramus, or we ship.
