Truck Door Lettering for Bergen County Contractors

Your name, town, phone and USDOT or license number on both doors, in clean cut vinyl that looks painted on. Here are the contractor templates in our vinyl designer, what a pair of doors costs, and what New Jersey expects to see on a work truck.

Contractor templates and prices

Each template opens in our vinyl designer on a truck door, with the lines already laid out. Type your company name, phone and numbers, pick a color, and the price updates as you go. These are the live one-color prices at the template size.

Ordering 2 or more of the same decal takes 10% off each, which is why both doors cost less than two singles. At 5 or more it is 20% off, so three trucks with the two-line layout is $124.80 for all six doors. The truck door kit works the same way: $161.10 per truck for 2 to 4 trucks and $143.20 per truck for 5 or more. A second color adds about a third on cut lettering, or $25.00 on the kit. Cut vinyl orders have a $15.00 minimum.

What New Jersey expects on the door

A lot of contractors letter the truck for advertising and find out later the state has rules too. The short version:

  • Name and town. N.J.S.A. 39:4-46 requires most commercial vehicles to show the owner's or lessee's name and the town of the principal place of business, on both sides, in letters at least 3 inches high. The NJ commercial template is laid out at that height. On the smaller templates, check the letter height in the designer before you order.
  • USDOT number. If your vehicle needs one (the FMCSA explains who does), 49 CFR 390.21 wants it on both sides with the carrier name, in a color that contrasts sharply with the door and readable from 50 feet in daylight. We suggest keeping the DOT line at least 2 inches tall.
  • HIC number. Home improvement contractors also show the business name and registration number with "HIC reg. #" on both sides, at least 1 inch high, under N.J.A.C. 13:45A-17.11. Plumbers, electricians and HVAC contractors have their own license number rules.

Our NJ truck lettering requirements guide covers each of these in more detail, including the plumbing, electrical and HVAC rules. It is a plain-English summary, not legal advice, so check with your licensing board if you are unsure.

Picking a size and color

  • Measure the flat part of the door. Body lines, handles and mirror mounts take up more room than you would think. Measure the flattest area below the window and leave an inch or two of clear space around it. The designer shows the exact cut size as a dashed box on the door.
  • Pickups, vans and box trucks. Doors vary a lot from one model to the next, so start from your tape measure, not the template size. Type your width and height into the designer, up to 48 inches, and it rescales the layout and the price.
  • Contrast. Black on a white truck and white on a dark one are the easiest to read from the road. Red, royal blue and metallic silver or gold are there if you want to match your logo.
  • Fewer words. People see a truck door for a few seconds. Company name, what you do, and a phone number usually do more than a list of every service.

Putting it on

Every order comes pre-masked with transfer tape, a squeegee and wet-apply instructions. Wash the door, let it dry, and apply it on a mild day out of direct sun. Line it up with painter's tape before you peel the backing. The lettering is Oracal 651 permanent outdoor vinyl, rated for about 6 years outside, and it comes off with heat when you trade the truck in.

Timing and pickup

Cut vinyl is ready in 3 to 5 business days after you order, or the next business day with rush for 25% more. Pickup is contactless in Paramus, Tuesday, Wednesday, Thursday and Saturday from 11am to 3pm. When your order is ready, we email you to set a pickup time, or text (201) 948-4433 with questions about your truck. If you also need crew shirts with the same logo, see our business shirts page.

Prices as of November 2026, from our online designers. Clothing is exempt from NJ sales tax; signs and vinyl are taxed at 6.625%.

Questions

Frequently asked questions

How much is truck door lettering?

In one color, a 24 x 10 inch name and phone layout is $26.00 a door, or $46.80 for both doors. The 30 x 16 inch NJ commercial layout with your town and USDOT number is $87.84 for a pair. The fill-in truck door kit is $179.00 for two doors. Cut vinyl orders have a $15.00 minimum.

What has to be on a work truck in New Jersey?

Under N.J.S.A. 39:4-46, most commercial vehicles must show the owner's name and the town of the principal place of business on both sides, in letters at least 3 inches high. Interstate carriers also need a USDOT number, and home improvement contractors need their HIC registration number. Our truck lettering requirements guide goes through each one.

Will vinyl lettering hurt my paint?

The lettering is Oracal 651 permanent outdoor vinyl, rated for about 6 years outside. When you sell the truck it comes off with a little heat and leaves no residue on factory paint in good condition. Avoid fresh paint or a damaged clear coat.

Can you put it on for me?

You apply it yourself. Every order comes masked on transfer tape with a squeegee and wet-apply instructions. We do not offer installation.

How fast can I get it?

Cut vinyl is ready in 3 to 5 business days. Rush, ready the next business day, is 25% more. Pickup in Paramus is free.
