Signs and Banners for Teaneck
Teaneck allows banners for a new business, with a permit, and keeps tight limits otherwise. Here is a plain summary for Cedar Lane and the other business districts, plus signs for homes, schools and community groups.
Teaneck's banner rules, in plain terms
Teaneck's sign rules are in § 33-18 of the township code, published by Zoneomics. The short version for businesses:
- Opening banners are allowed with a permit. Banners, flags and streamers are otherwise prohibited, but a business opening can have them for 30 days with a permit from the Building Department.
- New businesses get extra time for a temporary banner. The township allows a temporary banner while you wait for your permanent sign, from up to 60 days before opening to 90 days after.
- Other storefront banners follow the business sign limits for lettering and total sign area, and they have to be attached to the storefront.
- Nothing on poles, trees or in the street without Township Council approval.
The township's guide to establishing a business in Teaneck walks through permits, and the Building Department is at 818 Teaneck Road. We are a print shop, not the zoning office, so check with them before ordering anything for outside.
A sign plan for a new Teaneck business
Because the township gives a new business a window of time before and after opening, here is the order we would do things in:
- Before you open: a "Coming Soon" banner on the storefront under your temporary banner permit. A 3 x 6 foot vinyl banner is $50.50, and a 2 x 4 foot banner is $30.50. Both come with hems and grommets every 2 feet.
- Opening month: a grand opening banner, which the code allows for 30 days with a permit. Our grand opening template is a starting point; swap in your logo and colors.
- For the long run: cut vinyl lettering on the door and window for your hours, phone and website. Our store hours package is $79.00, and we can install it for $75.00. A 24 x 36 inch window graphic for promotions is $43.50.
Teaneck has four commercial districts, with Cedar Lane the best known, according to this Teaneck community guide. Whichever one you are in, a clean window does more than a crowded one. Pick one message per window.
Schools, leagues and community groups
Teaneck has a lot of community, cultural and religious organizations, and its youth sports leagues run independently of the recreation department. That means a lot of volunteers ordering signs and banners: a league banner for opening day, a booth banner for Teaneck Day, sponsor banners, signs for a walk or a food drive.
For events, remember the rule about poles and streets. Directional yard signs need to go on private property with the owner's permission, not on poles or in the public right-of-way. Our food drive and community event templates are easy to edit.
At home, Teaneck High School graduation signs, birthday signs and new-baby signs are the most common lawn signs we make.

Questions
Frequently asked questions
Can I hang a grand opening banner in Teaneck?
Yes, with a permit from the Building Department. The sign code allows banners, flags and streamers for a business opening for 30 days. The township also allows a temporary banner for a new business before and after it opens while the permanent sign is being made.
Can a Teaneck store hang a sale banner?
Storefront banners in the business districts have to follow the same lettering and size limits as regular business signs and be attached to the storefront. Ask the Building Department how much sign area you have left before ordering.
Can I put signs on poles or in the street for an event?
Not without approval. Teaneck does not allow signs on poles, trees or in public streets unless the Township Council approves them. Keep event signs on private property with the owner's permission.
Do community groups pay sales tax on signs?
Signs are taxable in New Jersey, but a nonprofit with an ST-5 exempt organization certificate can send it to us before ordering and pay no sales tax on signs. Clothing is tax-exempt for everyone.
