Yard Signs, Window Signs and Banners for Fair Lawn

Fair Lawn's sign code is short on banners and long on rules for temporary signs. Here is what it allows for businesses and homes, which of our signs fit, and what they cost.

What Fair Lawn's sign code allows

Fair Lawn's sign rules are in § 125-41 of the borough code, published by Zoneomics. For businesses, a few lines matter most:

  • Banners, streamers and pennants are not allowed, with two exceptions: unlettered ones for a grand opening, for up to 14 days, and for a going-out-of-business sale, for up to 45 days. Both are registered with the Zoning Officer.
  • Sidewalk and portable signs are not allowed, which rules out the usual sandwich board.
  • Temporary holiday and charitable signs can stay up for up to 45 days.

New tenants generally need a sign zoning permit for permanent signs; the borough's zoning page lists the forms and fees. We read the code as a print shop, not as lawyers, so call the Zoning Office before you order anything for outside your door.

In practice, Fair Lawn businesses on River Road, Fair Lawn Avenue and Broadway get the most out of their windows:

  • A window graphic, 24 x 36 inches, for a sale or a new menu. It is $43.50 in perforated film, which keeps your view out of the window.
  • Cut vinyl lettering for hours, phone and website, which goes up once and lasts. Our store hours package is $79.00, and installation is $75.00.
  • An indoor easel sign facing the door, 24 x 36 inches on foam board, for $40.00. It does the job of a sandwich board without being on the sidewalk.

For a grand opening, keep in mind that the code's exception is for unlettered banners and pennants, meaning color and attention, not words. Put your name and opening date in the window instead.

Signs for Fair Lawn homes, schools and teams

Most of what Fair Lawn families order from us goes on the lawn: graduation signs for Fair Lawn High School seniors, senior night signs, birthday and new-baby signs, and garage sale signs. Keep them on your own property and out of the sidewalk and street.

Fair Lawn has a big youth sports scene, so team banners are common too. A 3 x 6 foot banner hung on the dugout fence or a team tent is $50.50, with grommets every 2 feet and free wind slits if the field gets windy. For a sponsor banner on a league fence, check with the league first; they usually have a standard size.

The Fair Lawn Street Fair and Craft Show along River Road and Fair Lawn Avenue is one of the bigger street fairs in the area, as NJ.com's event listings noted. Vendors use a banner on the front of the table or tent so people can find them. A 2 x 4 foot banner fits most 6 foot tables.

Questions

Frequently asked questions

Can a Fair Lawn business hang a sale banner?

Generally not. Fair Lawn's sign code does not allow banners, streamers and pennants, except unlettered ones for a grand opening (up to 14 days) or a going-out-of-business sale (up to 45 days), registered with the Zoning Officer. Window graphics are the usual alternative.

Can I put a sandwich board on the sidewalk in Fair Lawn?

The code we read does not allow sidewalk or portable signs. Check with the Zoning Office, and consider a window graphic or an indoor easel sign near the door instead.

Are holiday and charity signs allowed in Fair Lawn?

Temporary signs for holidays and charitable causes are allowed for a limited time, up to 45 days under the code. Confirm placement with the borough.

How long does a Fair Lawn yard sign order take?

Standard turnaround is 5 to 7 business days after your deposit, or 3 business days with rush for 25% more. Pickup is contactless in Paramus, about 6 miles away.
