Small Business Saturday Window Signs for NJ Shops
The window is the one sign spot every shop has, and in most Bergen towns it is the easiest one to get right under the sign code. Here is what to put in it for Small Business Saturday, how big it can be, and what it costs.
What to put in the window
Small Business Saturday is November 28, 2026 (SBA). People walking past only glance at a window, so one clear message beats a busy one. A good Small Business Saturday window has three pieces:
- The day. "Shop Small Saturday, Nov 28" so people know something is on. The Small Business Saturday window decal template is ready to edit.
- One offer. "20% off everything" or "Free gift wrap." The one-deal window decal or a printed 24x36 window sign at $46.50 works here.
- Your hours. Store hours vinyl for the door is $99.00 and stays up all year. Add a holiday hours decal for December.

How big can it be? Town rules
Most Bergen towns limit window signs to a share of the glass. Measure the window first, then size the sign. Here is what the codes we read say:
| Town | Window sign rule |
|---|---|
| Paramus | Inside the window, no taller than 2 feet, no more than 20% of the window and 16 sq ft per wall, ground floor only, for permitted retail, service and restaurant uses (borough handout). Paramus updated its sign ordinance in October 2026, so confirm. |
| Teaneck | No more than 30% of the window, one window sign per occupancy, professionally printed, no words split across windows, nothing above the second story (Teaneck code). |
| Hackensack | Window signs attached to the inside of the glass, including ads for sales inside, limited to 20% of that window's area, in the section of the code we read (Hackensack code). Most temporary signs need a permit. |
| Ridgewood | Any sign within four feet of a window and visible from outside counts as a window sign under the code (Ridgewood definitions), so a sign on an easel just inside the glass counts too. |
| Fair Lawn | Signs on or within 24 inches of the inside of the glass are limited to a percentage of the glass area (Fair Lawn code). Since Fair Lawn generally does not allow lettered banners, the window is the main option. |
This is a plain summary, not legal advice. Rules change, so check with your zoning office before you order.
Quick sizing math
A window 6 feet wide and 7 feet tall is 42 square feet. At 20%, that allows about 8.4 square feet of sign. A 24x36 sign is 6 square feet, so it fits with room for a small hours decal, but in Paramus the 2-foot height limit means you would hang it sideways, 36 inches wide and 24 inches tall.

Questions
Frequently asked questions
How big can a window sign be in Paramus?
The borough's sign handout says a sign on the inside of a window can be no taller than 2 feet and cover no more than 20% of that window, up to 16 square feet per wall, on the ground floor of permitted retail, service and restaurant uses. Paramus updated its sign ordinance in October 2026, so confirm with the zoning office.
Should I use a printed window sign or vinyl lettering?
A printed window sign is quick and can be reused next year. Cut vinyl lettering looks cleaner and more permanent, and it is better for hours and your name. Many shops use vinyl for the name and hours and a printed sign for the one-day offer.
When do I need to order?
For pickup by Wednesday, November 25: printed window signs by Monday, November 16 (rush for 25% more until November 20), and cut vinyl decals by Wednesday, November 18.
Do window signs need a permit?
It depends on the town. Some exempt small temporary window signs, others count window signs toward your total sign area. Check with your zoning office, especially in Hackensack, where most signs need a permit.
