Signs for Downtown Ridgewood and Ridgewood Homes

Downtown Ridgewood has some of the most detailed sign rules in the area, especially for sidewalk sandwich boards. Here is what they say, what fits, and what our signs cost.

Sandwich boards in the Central Business District

Walk down East Ridgewood Avenue on a Saturday and you will see a lot of sidewalk signs. They are allowed, but the village is specific about them. Under the A-frame section of the sign code (§ 190-122H(9)), summarized by PermitPal and published in the village zoning code:

  • One A-frame sign per business, with an annual permit from the village.
  • A certificate of insurance is required (the code calls for $1 million in coverage).
  • Maximum 5 square feet, 24 inches wide and 42 inches tall.
  • At least 52 inches of clear sidewalk has to stay open for people walking by.

The size limit is the part that trips people up. Most store-bought sidewalk frames take a 24 x 36 inch insert, which is 6 square feet. Our standard A-frame insert is that size and costs $31.00, so it is too big for downtown Ridgewood. A 24 x 30 inch insert is exactly 5 square feet. If your frame takes a smaller size, text us its inside measurements at (201) 948-4433 and we will quote a custom-size insert.

Design tip for a sandwich board: it is read by people walking, from about 10 feet away. Three short lines work: what is new, the price or offer, and an arrow to the door. Change it weekly and people actually notice it.

Windows, banners and grand openings

Most permanent signs in Ridgewood need a sign permit, and the downtown has its own design expectations. That makes the store window the easiest place to work with:

  • Cut vinyl window lettering for your name, hours and website. Our store hours package is $79.00, with installation for $75.00 if you want us to put it up.
  • A 24 x 36 inch window graphic for a seasonal promotion is $43.50 in perforated film. Clear vinyl is also available.
  • An indoor easel sign just inside the door, 24 x 36 inches on foam board, is $40.00.

For a grand opening, the code allows unlettered balloons, pennants and banners for a short period (about 7 days) to mark the opening. A printed banner with your name or a sale on it counts as a sign, so get a permit first. Ask the village before you hang anything outside; we are not the zoning office.

Street fairs, schools and village events

The Ridgewood Fall Craft and Art Street Fair fills East Ridgewood Avenue with about 200 exhibitors, according to Explore New Jersey. A booth banner helps people find you in a long row of white tents. A 3 x 6 foot banner is $50.50 with hems and grommets every 2 feet, and you can add free wind slits for a windy day.

For families, most of our Ridgewood orders are lawn signs: Ridgewood High School graduation signs, senior night signs for spring sports, birthday and welcome-home signs. The village does not allow temporary signs on public property, poles or trees, so keep them on your own lawn.

Questions

Frequently asked questions

Can I put a sandwich board outside my store in downtown Ridgewood?

Yes, with a permit. In the Central Business District, the village allows one A-frame sign per business with an annual permit and a certificate of insurance. It can be up to 5 square feet, 24 inches wide and 42 inches tall, and has to leave a clear walkway of at least 52 inches.

Will your 24 x 36 A-frame insert work in Ridgewood?

Not as is. It is 24 inches wide, which is fine, but 6 square feet, which is over the 5 square foot limit. A 24 x 30 inch insert is exactly 5 square feet. Text us your frame's size and we will quote a custom-size insert.

Can I hang a grand opening banner in Ridgewood?

The code allows unlettered banners, pennants and balloons for a grand opening for a short period, about 7 days. A banner with words on it is treated like a regular sign and needs a sign permit. Check with the village before ordering.

Can I put graduation signs on the lawn in Ridgewood?

On your own lawn, yes. The village does not allow temporary signs on public property, utility poles or trees, so keep them out of the strip by the curb.
